Can We Please Normalize PTO? (and Announcement!)

Can we all please normalize appreciating PTO. Arnie and I decided a long time ago that we have to be the ones to prioritize our wellbeing. We didn’t wait for retirement to get the beach house. We don’t wait for retirement to travel. We don’t wait for retirement to regularly visit our children out of town. We don’t wait for retirement to take up hobbies, new sports, creative endeavors, meet new friends. We don’t have a bucket list. We live it every day.

I've spent most of my career as an execuitive at hospitals all to often seeing people retire, think they're going to do everything they've been waiting their whole lives to do, and an illness stops them in their tracks. Don't wait. Scale your dreams to what is reasonable and live them now.

Arnie and I are both high achievers and realize that sometimes doing our best means reflecting on what’s in the way of that happening.

The American culture has convinced many people that the work treadmill is necessary for success. That you must prove yourself a little more. That getting just a little more done will make you feel better. That getting a little more thin will make you feel better. That getting a little more house, car or electronics will make you feel better. You get the idea. It’s a treadmill to nowhere because “more” has no end game. It’s exhausting.

Indeed.com reports that 61% of remote workers, and 53% of on-site workers, are now finding it more difficult to unplug from work during their off-hours.

Your employer will replace you in 45 days and hardly ever look back. Don’t look back on your life to your work as your only identity. You are deeper than that.

Let me say it now: You are already a success. You are proven. You are beautiful. You are enough just as you are. Another purse, fancy pen or accessory won’t change any of those things.

However, your experiences are important because they help shift the perspective on your wellbeing. You deserve to feel joy. Sometimes we spend so much time away from it that we forget that.

Our culture tells you that you need to “thrive” to be happy. That’s nonsense. You’re already happy when you’re not thinking about what you should be doing or guilting yourself about what you did or worrying about things you can’t change. The goal is to feel SATISFIED. We are satisfied when we choose what we focus on instead of allowing our thoughts to run us.

You can never get enough of the things you don’t need. The money we save on the “stuff” we don’t need we use on our wellbeing.

Wishing you the joy of prioritizing your wellbeing today so that ‘satisfied’ is more than enough. You’re awesome.
